Which servers emails are sent from

Which servers emails are sent from with shared hosting accounts seems to be a grey area in the forums, so I thought I’d share what I’ve learnt while trying to fix my yahoo mail delivery problems.

First up, a Hostgator Admin has informed me that “you've got domain keys installed, which means that your emails are being sent directly from the server, and not using the mail gateways.”

I’ve checked this out by sending mail with domainkeys on and domainkeys off – and sure enough, when they are on mail is being sent directly from my server (gatorxxx.hostgator.com) with no mention of websitewelcome.com.

Switch off domainkeys and mail starts going through the websitewelcome.com gateway. I’ve posted both headers for you guys to see below – just in case anyone else was trying to figure this out!

On another note, it’s becoming more obvious yahoo has flagged the server I’m on somehow – since mail sent with domainkeys off (i.e. sent via the mail gateways) gets delivered to yahoo, but mail sent with domainkeys on (sent direct from the server I’m on) doesn’t get through if it contains attachments. Only problem is with domainkeys off, yahoo flags a lot more of my messages as spam. Looks like a no-win situation at the moment.

Maybe I’ll just have to get hostgator to move me to a different server if I want to use domainkeys? Would be kind of funny if that was the only way they could fix it – I guess it would mean no-one else on that server would be able to use domainkeys either... hmmm

Hmmm
