Sendo considerado a mais antiga epopeia sobrevivente em qualquer outra língua europeia, o poema épico Beowulf é também o mais extenso fragmento da literatura de imaginação em escrito no Inglês Antigo. Através da história, a figura nobre de Beowulf representa de maneira clara o ideal heroico anglo- saxônico de bravura, generosidade e coragem.
O poema apresenta um elo entre duas tradições, a pagã e a cristã. Os elementos épicos que mais refletem na cultura daqueles povos são: a lealdade aos chefes ( reis ) e suas tribos e a vingança aos inimigos, deixando clara a figura de um guerreiro.
